Dona Laurita
Dona Laurita has been documenting life as a visual storyteller, personal historian, and professional photographer for three decades. Her images invite the observer to explore ways of seeing, encouraging the viewer to participate in the essence of the ordinary, be it the power of a simple gesture, the quality and diversity of light, or a moment in time that may otherwise have been overlooked, in a deep, dramatic and sensitive way.
Dona is a recipient of the prestigious National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) grant for her powerful project, “Stories Matter” working with marginalized youth engaging them in the importance of telling their story. She has been an artist-in-residence with institutions and schools throughout Colorado facilitating adolescents and young adults to learn to “see” the world in which they exist. She has also received numerous grants from Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) and Louisville Cultural Council (LCC) and Louisville Arts Association (LAA) for her “Silhouette Project: Stories of Immigrants and Refugees”
Dona continues to push boundaries with her work printing on uncommon substrates, addressing issues and situations that challenge thought, discourse, comfort and believes that creating a visual story demands being present with a crucial awareness of existence starting with a moment touching emotion, light, drama, depth, and listening - all of which are quintessential elements in her striking work.
